Southwest Florida is a broad term that encompasses multiple counties on the west coast of Florida. In general it refers to the areas south of Tampa, and frequently the areas south of Sarasota as well.
Lee County is the largest of these counties in population. It is home to several large cities and communities, spread from border to border.
Fort Myers is the county seat and refers to an area larger than just the official city limits. Bordered on the northwest by the Caloosahatchee River, the area extends south almost to Estero and east to I-75. Fort Myers is the primary employment center for the county, but is also home to many residential communities of all varieties.
The city of Cape Coral is the second largest in the state, by area. It encompasses over 100 square miles on the peninsula bordered by the Caloosahatchee River and Matlacha Pass. As visible in the map above, the city is home to over 400 miles of canals and lakes, making it a boaters paradise. With a growing population of over 100,000 residents and swiftly burgeoning commercial development, Cape Coral is increasingly providing all residents need in terms on entertainment, shopping, dining and upscale residential housing options.
South Lee County was one of the fastest growing areas both in luxury gated residential communities and beautifully planned commercial developments. With unique building codes, the Estero and Bonita Springs areas have paid close attention to keeping their communities attractive and enticing. Mixed use developments like Coconut Point are housing both luxury residential communities near major shopping and entertainment districts, minimizing travel hassles and encouraging a renewed sense of community among residents.
